The ballet is a depiction of the struggle between Love and Death for the souls of Romeo and Juliet after their deaths. The music is Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture. The ballet is a very significant one in Australian ballet history. It premiered in 1951 with Grinwis as Romeo, Kathleen Gorham as Juliet, Bruce Morrow as the Spirit of Death and Helene Ffrance as the Spirit of Love. It was danced by various leading dancers of the company for several years.
